Reasons for TPE odor generation

During the processing and molding of TPE, some customers have provided feedback that the odor is too strong. What is the reason for the odor generated by TPE?

The reasons are as follows:

  • The composition of TPE raw materials contains white oil, which belongs to low molecular weight substances. During the processing, under the influence of high temperature, small molecular weight substances will evaporate, causing the raw materials to have a strong odor. If the quality of the white oil used is too poor, then this is also one of the reasons for the odor. According to the quality of the oil, the odor of the oil itself is completely different, so it is best to choose high-quality white oil.
  •
  • Excessive processing temperature is also one of the reasons. The higher the temperature, the greater the degree of material degradation, the faster the screw speed, and the shorter the time the material stays in the screw, theoretically reducing the probability of decomposition.
  •
  • In addition to oil and temperature factors, another reason is the selection of formula materials, preferably using high-quality raw materials for mixing and processing. You can choose Sungallon with peace of mind.

The main odor source in TPE comes from SEBS, small molecules in white oil that are separated during the processing and released through the shearing of the screw. The main odor source is still softened oil, so softened oil should be selected with high flash point, high viscosity, and low impurities to reduce odor. At the same time, the processing temperature and shear force should not be too high. The emission of VOCs can be reduced by improving the process and increasing vacuum pumping to reduce odor.
